Families take centre stage at the 2026 Knysna Oyster Festival

Running from 3–12 July under the theme “A feast of family fun”, this year’s festival programme combines outdoor adventure, sport, food, markets, nature experiences and live entertainment across Knysna.

At the heart of the festival, the Festival Hub at the Knysna High School sports fields is set to be a lively, family-friendly space where there’s always something happening. With a dedicated kids’ entertainment area, a wide selection of food stalls, local crafts and live entertainment throughout the day, it’s an easy place for families to settle in and make a day of it.

Children can bounce their way through the giant inflatable park, test their skills on pedal carts and bungy trampolines, enjoy face painting, create masterpieces in The Creative Corner, make slime creations, join drumming circles, explore the Bubble House and take part in a variety of arts and crafts activities. The Gel Mania Arena will add another layer of excitement with gel blaster missions by day and UV glow experiences by night. Families can also browse the Neighbourhood Makers market, explore local art exhibits and discover unique finds at The Emporium.

Special Hub events throughout the festival include SuperArtKids drawing sessions, a Sunday Circle pop-up market, candy and slime workshops, candle-making workshops for children, family-friendly sip-and-paint sessions, reading time hosted by the Knysna Education Trust, a vibrant Night Market and a Glow Fest neon party for teenagers.

Families can also enjoy interactive reptile displays and educational presentations by the Slangboere team, as well as fascinating bird encounters with the Garden Route Birds of Prey Sanctuary, including owl talks, meet-and-greets with the birds, educational presentations and flight demonstrations. These experiences offer children and adults alike the opportunity to learn more about some of South Africa’s most remarkable wildlife in a fun and engaging environment.

Family-friendly sporting events include the ever-popular Knysna Forest Marathon weekend, featuring a market, food stalls and a large kiddies’ play area at the Festival Hub, as well as the Knysna Cycle Tour, which includes dedicated family and children’s rides. Families can also enjoy the Crazy Store 5 km Fun Run, the Fraaisig Family Fun Event with walking, running and cycling options, a 4 km paddle event, mini hockey tournaments, football matches, cross-country races and the SWD Street Mile. Spectator-friendly activities mean that even those not participating can still enjoy the excitement from the sidelines.

Nature-loving families are also spoilt for choice with a series of Garden Route Trail Experiences taking place throughout the festival. These include the Fossil Footprints hike along Platbank beach, the Gericke’s Point Rock Pools experience, the Forest Wood Wide Web walk through the indigenous forest, the Fabulous Fynbos Hike at Goukamma Nature Reserve and the Moonlight Meander at Gericke’s Point. Designed for curious explorers, these guided experiences showcase some of the Garden Route’s most spectacular landscapes.

Additional family-friendly highlights include the Knysna Model Railway and Hobbies Fair, the Oyster Festival Car Show for Charity and a host of community events taking place across the town.

Lungiswa Goya, Manager: Economic Development at Knysna Municipality and spokesperson for the festival, says the 2026 programme has been designed to appeal across generations.

“In 2026, our focus is firmly on families, creating opportunities for people of all ages to participate, connect and enjoy the diversity of events on offer. The programme includes activities suited to young children, teenagers, parents and grandparents, ensuring there is something meaningful and enjoyable for every generation,” says Goya.
